On 10th November 2015, two members of the Irish Air Corps – Flight Sergeant Noel Daly and Flight Sergeant David Singleton came to visit our school. They presented us with our very own National Flag and a copy of the Proclamation which was read out by Padraig Pearse on Easter Monday 1916. During our short ceremony, the Proclamation was also read out. Fionn O’Gorman represented us wonderfully by reading the paragraph relating to children. Imelda Lambert then accepted the Irish Flag on our behalf. Her grandfather was very proud to see this event as his father was a strong Nationalist. Mrs Cleary reminded us all that war is never the answer and that we should always find a peaceful solution to our problems. On the night before he was executed, Padraig Pearse wrote the poem “The Wayfarer”. The sadness in the poem reminds us to avoid war and violence at all costs. Laura Kiely read the poem beautifully. After a few questions and answers, Ciaran presented our visitors with a lovely `Thank You card’ and then we all sang Amhran na bhFiann. It really was a lovely occasion and we were very proud of all the children who were so well behaved. We will now try to write our own Proclamation for the next 100 years. On March 15th 2016, we will raise our National Flag with pride along with all the other schools in the country. We will have a great celebration that day! Thanks to Mick Behan who captured some lovely memories of the day with his great photos.
